We are so pleased to introduce our newest “Bride to Be” Sarah! Sarah & her mom have been fans of our work for the past few years as she has received a couple pieces of our work for weddings and other events. So when we found out Sarah had gotten engaged just a few weeks back, we knew she would have a wonderful story to tell and be the perfect fit for our b2b feature! Sarah starts her blog with “the proposal” and as a USC grad and Princeton grad, respectively, we think Sarah & Ben offer the perfect combination of West Coast & East Coast. We are so thrilled to be a part of the celebration of their love!

Without further adieu, meet Sarah & Ben!

First of all, I just want to start this off by saying how completely thrilled I am to be able to blog for Laura Hooper ~ I absolutely LOVE Laura’s work. Being engaged is already an exciting time for me, but being able to talk about my experience as a bride to be on this blog just makes it that much better!

Ben and I met about 4 ½ years ago through mutual friends. It’s crazy to think that we’ve spent almost all of our 20’s together; the time has really flown by.  Ben said recently that he knew he was going to marry me after our first date. I was surprised upon hearing this and responded by saying, “Wait, are you serious? Really??” he then replied “Well, I knew I was going to date you for a long time.”  Being as we were both 23 at the time and not really thinking about marriage, this seemed like a more realistic answer and I still took it as a compliment. =)

A few months before we got engaged, Ben and I had been talking about marriage more and more, so I had a sense that the actual proposal was coming sometime in the near future. My birthday was October 11, and when he asked me to block off October 8 for a birthday surprise I have to admit I had a LITTLE inkling that maybe something was going to happen.

Ben started off the day by picking me up and taking me to the Getty Villa in Malibu. It was a perfect Southern California day and we had a great time exploring the villa and looking at ancient works of art. After that he took me to the beach where he had prepared a picnic with all my favorite foods – pepperoni, prosciutto, crackers, cheese, and bread! After the picnic he gave me my birthday presents, a bike helmet and a bike pump. Since I had recently gotten a bike this was definitely a practical gift, however I had kind of wanted something a little more hmmm, glittery? But I tried to put my disappointment aside and just be happy that I was celebrating my birthday with him. At this point I knew that today just wasn’t the day I was getting engaged, and I was ok with it because I knew it would come soon.

After that we had plans to go to dinner. Ben didn’t want me to know where we were going so I was blindfolded on the way there. I tried to figure it out based on the directions that he was driving but I was totally at a loss. After awhile I felt the car come to a stop. We got out and I saw the Griffith Park Observatory (a place that has been very special to us) lit up in the distance. I felt that Ben was going to say something, but then a woman pulled up behind him and began taking pictures of the Observatory. At this point I knew that Ben was probably going to propose but couldn’t because he wanted it to be private, and this woman was taking pictures for what felt like an hour. So we just stood there, looking at the Observatory, in an awkward silence until she left. After she finally drove away Ben took my hand, said a bunch of things that I’m sure were beautiful and romantic but I was too happy to remember, got down on one knee, and asked me to spend the rest of his life with him. I happily said yes (I think but again I don’t remember much), and we hugged and basically just kept saying wow, oh my gosh, for about 10 minutes.

After the proposal Ben said that he wanted to get a drink somewhere. I was in too much of a daze to really care where we went, all I cared about was calling my parents and telling them the news. On the way to the bar I tried to call everyone in my family and no one was picking up. I was a little annoyed until I got there and saw that Ben had surprised me with all my family and friends for an impromptu engagement party! I have never been so surprised and felt so much love. It was a perfect night and I can’t wait to spend forever with my best friend!
